Welders are Everywhere!

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

Day trippin’ in Santa Fe, and who do I meet? Tomás. He and his buddy were stopping off at the bank to deposit a check. They’d been working on a film. They didn’t mention any names, but filmmaking is a big industry in New Mexico. Some titles you may recognize: No Country for Old Men, Traffic, Mall Cop, Sunshine Cleaning, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Seraphim Fallsthe complete list is online and includes t.v. shows in production here: Breaking Bad, Crash, and In Plain Sight.

So with filming, comes a lot of “Below the Line” work… the stuff that happens behind the scenes… the stuff that makes the scenes, literally building sets and props and scaffolding and lord knows what else.  And there’s work for welders too.  And itt’s been good work for Tomás. In fact, he says his Lincoln Electric Welder is “the only redhead that ever made me any money!”

Check out the directory of welders online at the Film New Mexico site.

And keep your eyes open…  welders are everywhere!

Rosie’s Girls

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Rosie’s Girls is an all-girls camp for 6th to 8th graders in Vermont (and California, South Carolina, and Ohio) that primarily teaches them skills in trades like carpentry, welding, electrical wiring, auto repair, and fire fighting!  The rest of their time is spent making their own artwork and testing their strength in activites like rock climbing and self defense.

To hear more about this experience in the girls’ own words, you can read The Riveter Blog, written by the girls participating at the California camp.

You Race Like a Girl! (and that’s a compliment)

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

The Cornwall Motor Speedway kicks off on May 17th in Cornwall, NY, and in celebration of this much-beloved sport, we have an article for you about two girls for whom racing is their middle name.  Go-kart racing, that is.

Racing is a real family affair for Ladouceurs

Posted By TODD HAMBLETON

Cornwall Motor Speedway season is just a few weeks away.

And don’t forget about go-kart season.

The Ladouceur girls sure haven’t. Brianna Ladouceur, 10, and Shelbie Ladouceur, 16, are, well, old pros at the four-year-old track for kids.

And, they’re coming off a very successful 2008 season — each Ladouceur girl picked up six wins at their home course.

“They did very well,” said a proud dad, Mike Ladouceur.

Racing is in her blood

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

I don’t know about you, but I love to see girls challenging gender stereotypes….From Dateline NBC’s May 10, 2009 program… Meet 8-year-old Macy Causey. She is only in second grade, but she’s already racing cars like a pro.

I can’t get the embedded video feature to work, but check out the story on NBC’s website.

Rosie– The Musical

Monday, May 11th, 2009

You may or may not know that I am slightly obsessed with Rosie the Riveter….    partly because like for many women, Rosie embodies the strength of the American Woman.  HOWEVER, did you know there was a “Wendy the Welder” too? I’ve seen references to her here and there, but not much information.  Which to me, makes Rosie all the more interesting. What was it about Rosie?  How did she become the icon? Was it all Norman Rockwell’s fault?

I recently found this in my cruising of the internet searching for Rosie:

Interestingly when I talk to people about this, I invariably hear a story. Even my creative writing teacher– his grandmother worked in the shipyards in Norfolk during World War II. Do you have any Rosie the Riveter (or Wendy the Welder) connections?

If you can’t stand the heat…

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

… then you should buy a new Titanium Elite™ Auto-Darkening Helmet with an “innovative aluminum heat shield protects the analog lens in most high-amperage (300+ amp) applications”.

Oh.  You thought I was going to say, “… get out of the kitchen”.  Joke’s on you then.

From MillerWelds.com:

elitetitanium_webAPPLETON, Wis., April 15, 2009—In response to customer demand for a welding helmet that can better withstand high-amperage, high-heat applications, Miller Electric Mfg. Co. created the Titanium Elite™ auto-darkening helmet, a new addition to the Arc Armor™ line of welding safety products. Introduced today, the Titanium Elite directly addresses the problem of heat build-up in welding applications that require 300 amps or more, conditions that can affect the lens performance of standard auto-darkening helmets and make it uncomfortable for the welder. The Titanium Elite—the newest member of Miller’s Elite Series of auto-darkening helmets—reflects the heat away from the operator and features an aluminum heat shield to protect the auto-darkening lens. A shock-absorbing gasket, which adds durability and protection from drop impact in hard welding environments, also surrounds the lens.
