The projected shortage of welders… it’s been talked to death in every circle. But have you yet heard the figures?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has stated that in order to fill the gap after a generation of baby boomers retires, the industry will need a total of 240,000 new recruits every year, a projected total of 450,000 by 2014 in the U.S. alone.
But how to attract new welders?
Welding Magazine has a couple of ideas…
The Importance of Welding Education
By WILLIAM P. HITE, General President, United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumb | Mar 1, 2009 12:00 PM
Welding, in one form or another, has been an integral part of the work performed by the United Association for nearly 100 years. While the technology of welding has evolved dramatically during that period of time, the need for skilled welders in our industry is greater than ever.
Today’s welder must be proficient in multiple welding processes. At the very minimum, he or she must be able to weld all manner of piping using the manual SMAW and GTAW processes, but the necessary skills sets do not stop there.
Ignore the statue of a woman bursting into flame… Although that is intersting, this video is primarily about a welder helping some kids to do a bit of welding themselves at the San Mateo Maker Faire this last year.
In English, “blech” is a word often used to describe something distasteful. This makes the phrase EuroBLECH sound like an event that one would would wish to avoid participating in. In German, however, the word “Blech” simply means “sheet metal”, making EuroBLECH quite the appropriate title for a conference on metal fabrication.
EuroBLECH 2008: A celebration of metal fabricating and forming
A visit to Hannover, Germany, for the world’s largest sheet metal manufacturing exhibition reveals a European taste for automation and efficiency

EuroBLECH is a celebration more than anything. Most of the booths have plenty of tables and, usually, a bar for customers, distributors, business partners, and friends to swing by, chat, have a drink, and talk about life both in and out of the industry. In fact, unlike shows in North America, a visitor will find materials suppliers—the folks that make the metal sheet, plate, and tube—among the exhibitors. Everyone comes together for this global event.
What does a European metal fabricating and forming tradeshow mean for a U.S. fabricator? Apparently, a whole lot.
Our friends over at JoeWelder.com have decided that their awesomeness simply cannot be expressed in words.
So they made a video…

Lincoln Electric Launches Welding Fume Awareness Campaign“Are You Ready?” campaign helps companies get ready for hexavalent chromium and other OSHA regulationsCleveland – The Lincoln Electric Company has launched its “Are You Ready?” awareness campaign, designed to educate employers, as well as the general welding community, about effective fume control practices. The campaign is also designed to help fabricators understand both recent and upcoming Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA) regulations, including the hexavalent chromium standards going into effect on May 31, 2010.
The campaign promotes welding fume control and safety awareness and offers access to a comprehensive one-stop shop of reference materials, interactive tools and product solutions for weld fume control. This Lincoln Electric initiative is intended to educate the welding community on current and pending OSHA regulations and the proper operating practices to follow, particularly in reference to occupational exposure to welding fume containing hexavalent chromium and manganese.
Why is it that so many more men than women end up in careers in the math and science arena? Is it because men have more aptitude than women? Or is it because we think that they do? Psychologist Nadya Fouad explores this and other possible explanations in this fascinating article:
Tracking The Reasons Many Girls Avoid Science And Math
ScienceDaily (Sep. 8, 2008) — Most parents and many teachers believe that if middle-school and high-school girls show no interest in science or math, there’s little anyone can do about it.
New research by a team that includes vocational psychologists at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) indicates that the self-confidence instilled by parents and teachers is more important for young girls learning math and science than their initial interest.
While interest is certainly a factor in getting older girls to study and pursue a career in these disciplines, more attention should be given to building confidence in their abilities early in their education, says UWM Distinguished Professor Nadya Fouad. She is one of the authors of a three-year study aimed at identifying supports and barriers that steer girls toward or away from science and math during their education.
“The relationship between confidence and interest is close,” says Fouad. “If they feel they can do it, it feeds their interest.”
