Welding in Virtual Reality

Friday, February 19th, 2010

I never thought I’d see the day. Let me repeat that – NEVER.

But the day has indeed arrived, from whence forward, a newbie welder will be able to practice welding, not the old-fashioned way, with torch and electrode, but via virtual reality.

You can thank Lincoln Electric for this new advancement in welding technology — they are the producers of the new VRTEX 360 which enables the wearer to weld via a virtual welding gun and a helmet that is equipped with monitors on the inside.

You can “virtually” weld in a welding booth, on a construction site — even on a base in the desert!

And, it has to be said, this is the greenest welding machine on the market, and it will enable students to learn faster than ever before.

Who knows — this newest welding “video game” could become so popular that instructors will have to pry the virtual torch right out of their students’ unwilling hands.

One can only hope.

ultra-core- Low-fume generation rates for increased cleanliness and visibility

- Excellent bead stacking and slag removal

- H8 diffusible hydrogen levels

Cleveland — Lincoln Electric now offers the new UltraCore® 70C (E70T-1 H8, E70T-9H8) wire in its portfolio of premium gas-shielded, flux-cored (FCAW-G) consumables. This new product is designed to meet the requirements of the structural fabrication, heavy equipment and ship building industries with low fume generation rates, excellent bead stacking and high deposition rates.

Low-Fume Generation Rate and Diffusible Hydrogen

The low fume generation rates of UltraCore 70C increase cleanliness and visibility while welding, as well as improved ability to control welding fume. Diffusible hydrogen levels are controlled at an H8 AWS classification to provide resistance to hydrogen induced cracking.

Welders are Everywhere!

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

Day trippin’ in Santa Fe, and who do I meet? Tomás. He and his buddy were stopping off at the bank to deposit a check. They’d been working on a film. They didn’t mention any names, but filmmaking is a big industry in New Mexico. Some titles you may recognize: No Country for Old Men, Traffic, Mall Cop, Sunshine Cleaning, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Seraphim Fallsthe complete list is online and includes t.v. shows in production here: Breaking Bad, Crash, and In Plain Sight.

So with filming, comes a lot of “Below the Line” work… the stuff that happens behind the scenes… the stuff that makes the scenes, literally building sets and props and scaffolding and lord knows what else.  And there’s work for welders too.  And itt’s been good work for Tomás. In fact, he says his Lincoln Electric Welder is “the only redhead that ever made me any money!”

Cleveland – Lincoln Electric has teamed up with Chip Foose – award-winning custom car designer and die-hard Lincoln Electric enthusiast – to introduce Vista(R) Hemisfear(TM), an auto-darkening welding helmet inspired by Foose’s 500-HP Hemisfear hot rod.

The latest edition to Lincoln’s Vista(R) series of welding helmets, the Hemisfear welding helmet captures the essence of Foose’s limited production hot rod, a classic car that gave Foose one of his initial claims to fame in 2006. The helmet features the hot rod’s three distinct colors: neon green, black and orange with a custom silver stripe on the side. Other embellishments to the helmet include Chip Foose’s signature and the Foose Design(TM) logo.

The Vista Hemisfear is the company’s first using a new lightweight shell design, bringing the total helmet weight to 20 oz. or less depending on configuration. All Vista helmets feature:

  •  Solar powered auto-darkening, eliminating operator error and alkaline corrosion
  •  Grind and TIG modes, as well as variable delay settings for greater operator control
  •  Four independent arc sensors to ensure reliability
  •  Different view sizes for user preferences, including the 3000 series, with one of the largest views in the industry
